Tenses by level

A1 covers the present tense (Präsens). A2 adds the simple past (Präteritum), including the modal verbs. B1 adds Konjunktiv II, the würde and wäre forms used for politeness and hypotheticals. B2 adds Konjunktiv I, used for indirect speech. C1 and C2 use the same tenses with rarer strong verbs.

German present tense conjugation

Regular German verbs in the present take these endings: ich -e, du -st, er/sie/es -t, wir -en, ihr -t, sie/Sie -en.

Stem-changing verbs

Many strong verbs change their stem vowel in the du and er forms: fahren becomes du fährst, lesen becomes du liest, nehmen becomes du nimmst.

Common irregular verbs

sein: ich bin, du bist, er ist. haben: ich habe, du hast, er hat. werden: ich werde, du wirst, er wird.
