Two-way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen)

Nine German prepositions take either the accusative or the dative: an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen. Use the accusative for movement toward a destination (wohin?). Use the dative for position or location (wo?). Example: Ich gehe in die Schule (accusative, movement). Ich bin in der Schule (dative, location).

Prepositions that always take the accusative

durch, für, gegen, ohne, um, bis, entlang always take the accusative case.

Prepositions that always take the dative

aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber, ab, außer always take the dative case.
